Postscript to “Oswald’s Ghost”

Two decades after my inconclusive conclusion to this story, it seems fair to say that conspiracy theorists have failed to make a convincing case, but that shouldn’t necessarily warrant smugness on the part of lone-gunman partisans. One mystery of the assassination continues to deepen, the mystery of Oswald. If it’s hard to deny he fired those shots, it’s still hard to understand why, what motive, what influence, what Oswald was behind them. He may have been a lone gunman, but there was never a lone Oswald: It was crowded inside that head, a labyrinth but not a lonely one. Despite the heroic efforts of people like Norman Mailer (who wrestled with Oswald’s Ghost in Oswald’s Tale), the picture just doesn’t seem to come into focus. As a character, he has become one of the enduring American enigmas. Perhaps the closest we’ll ever come may be the fictive Oswald Don DeLillo gives us in his brilliant, pitch-perfect novel, Libra.
